Eliminate high-interest debt with a balanced 0% intro APR plan When people in HawaiÊ»i want to get control of credit card debt, a balance transfer card is one of the most effective tools. These cards let you shift existing balances from high-APR accounts into a card offering a 0% intro APR for a set promo periodâusually 12â21 monthsâand pay down the base without interest eating your payments. But not all balance transfer offers are equal. To extract real benefit, you need to balance intro length, BT fees, revert APRs, and your own payoff discipline. Use this guide to plan smart, then consider our 0% APR & Low-Interest page if you also need promotion on new purchases.
A balance transfer lets you move debt from one card to another. Key features of a transfer card often include:
Many issuers require you to initiate your transfer within 45â60 days of approval. The longer the intro window (e.g. 18â21 months), the more breathing room you have. But those generally come with slightly higher BT fees.
Always run the math. For example, a 3% fee on a $5,000 transfer costs $150. If your prior card had a 20% APR, you might pay over $1,000 in interest over a year. A slightly higher fee can be worth it if it gives you more months to pay down the balance.
Once the 0% period ends, any remaining balance will revert to a high variable APR (often 20%â30%). Plan to pay off the balance completely before this kicks in.
Donât add new purchases to the balance transfer card unless it also has a promotional rate for new purchases. Keep the account focused solely on debt paydown. Also, avoid cash advances, which accrue interest immediately and donât benefit from the promo.
Use a balance transfer card if:
